Since July 13, 2026, roulette, blackjack and slot fans have had more options in Alberta. The province has officially opened its regulated online gambling market to private operators.
It’s a significant change for Alberta players. Until now, PlayAlberta was the province’s regulated online gambling option. Players can now access a growing number of private online casinos operating within Alberta’s new regulatory framework.
For Canada, this isn’t entirely new. Ontario led the way in April 2022, becoming the country’s first province to launch a competitive regulated iGaming market with private operators. Alberta is now the second province to adopt this model.
The Wheel Started Spinning on July 13, 2026
European roulette, live dealer games, blackjack, baccarat and slots are all part of Alberta’s new market. The change goes well beyond sports betting: online casino games are a central part of the regulated system.
To participate in Alberta’s market, operators must be registered with Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) and enter into a commercial agreement with the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC).
The two organizations have different roles. AGLC oversees regulation and compliance, while AiGC conducts and manages the province’s commercial iGaming market.
For Alberta players, the basic rule is straightforward: a familiar casino name isn’t enough on its own. You should also check that the operator is registered to participate in Alberta’s regulated market.
More Online Roulette in a Local Regulated Market
For roulette players, the arrival of new operators means more choice. Casinos can offer digital tables as well as live dealer roulette, provided the games, operators and suppliers meet Alberta’s requirements.
One interesting detail is that Evolution Gaming, one of the world’s biggest live casino specialists, is among the iGaming suppliers registered with AGLC.
Players familiar with European Roulette will feel right at home: 37 pockets, a single zero and a house edge of 2.7%. Depending on the casino, Alberta players may also find a selection of live roulette variants.
The same principle applies to slots. The choice can be extensive, but a game available elsewhere in Canada isn’t automatically available in Alberta. Individual casino catalogues depend on the operator, software provider and provincial requirements.
How Can You Identify a Regulated Alberta Casino?
A few simple checks can save plenty of guesswork.
The first place to look is AGLC’s official registry, where players can find operators and suppliers registered for iGaming. Major brands and operators currently listed include Caesars, FanDuel and DraftKings, alongside a growing number of other casino platforms.

Ontario Led the Way in 2022
Alberta didn’t start from scratch. On April 4, 2022, Ontario became the first Canadian province to open a regulated competitive iGaming market to private operators.
Ontario’s system involves the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) and iGaming Ontario (iGO). Four years later, Alberta has followed a similar general direction while creating its own regulatory and commercial structure.
This highlights an important feature of gambling regulation in Canada: there is no single national online casino licence. Provinces determine how gambling is conducted and managed within their own jurisdictions.
A casino operating in Ontario is therefore not automatically registered to operate in Alberta, and vice versa.
More Choice, but More Player Protection Too
Alberta’s goal wasn’t simply to put more casino sites online. Before the regulated market launched, AiGC estimated that around 70% of online gambling activity in Alberta was taking place on offshore platforms that weren’t regulated locally.
The new framework introduces requirements covering areas such as player verification, security and responsible gambling.
Registered operators must provide safeguards that include financial and time limits, while Alberta has also introduced a centralized self-exclusion system for regulated iGaming platforms.

What Changes for Alberta Players?
Since July 2026, choosing a regulated online casino in Alberta no longer means being limited to a single provincial platform. Players now have access to multiple registered operators and a more competitive market, bringing Alberta closer to the model already established in Ontario.
The important distinction is regulatory. An Alberta player shouldn’t assume that an international or Canadian-facing licence alone gives a casino access to the province’s regulated market.
For example, a licence from the Kahnawake Gaming Commission may tell you something about how a casino is regulated elsewhere, but it does not replace Alberta registration.
Before putting chips on the table, check that the casino itself is registered for Alberta and that the games you want to play are actually available there. The wheel may be spinning in Alberta, but choosing the right table still matters.
